This is what I will be opening this weekend and will post a WTN. You probably cannot find the exact wine but any '01 Vaccqueyras should do fine. I don't think the good CnPs from '01 are quite ready but Vacqueyras should be drinking well, still will decant the wine.

Excellent! Thanks for starting an Open Mike round, Walt. I'll look for an '01 Vacqueyras today.

The only 01 I have is a Domaine des Amouriers, which forum notes say is NOT yet ready, but I may well jump in with a 2000 Sang des Cailloux, which my notes say was starting to come into shape in March of 05. Is that close enough????

Sang des Cailloux? There`s a winery from the old Liquor Board days, should look up some notes from the early 90`s. Thanks OW.

That sounds close enough, got the grape, the area and the year is close enough for highway work. This wine was a point of discussion with another wine geek this weekend. I still have one '98 in the cellar that I bought for $12. Saw the current release in the wine store for $30. This used to be a great QPR that has priced itself out of the market, at least as far as I am concerned.

Thanks for reminding me of this wine, Walt. By all rights, it should be dead, but it was still singing last night. I bought six bottles of this in 1992 based on a recco by Carlo Russo, and a sample bottle we loved. This one got caught in the chaos of a move to a new cellar, but it survived well. My second tasting note back in 1994 read:

1990 Domaine La Garrigue Vacqueyras Cuvée Spéciale Southern Rhône France. Carlo Russo. $13.00. Label: In the best traditions of fine winemaking, the Domaine de la Garrigue believes in minimum treats before bottling. This remarkably rich, full bodied wine from the Rhône Valley is not filtered, thereby retaining all its heady bouquet and depth of character. It might, however, throw a slight deposit. Four stars for the regular Cuvée in 1995. Parker: four stars. P88. This late-released Vacqueyras from the superb 1990 vintage is a knock-out. Proprietor Bernard has fashioned a big, rich, unfined and unfiltered wine that is loaded with fruit, and finishes with a full-bodied blast of highly extracted fruit, low acidity, and sweet tannin. Drink this terrific Vacqueyras over the next 4-5 years. Don't miss it if it's available in your marketplace! Importer: European Cellars, Eric Solomon, New York, NY.

Good red color; nice and strong fruit aroma; distinctive fruit taste with very mild tannin; 15 to 20 second finish. 5*.

My notes from last night: Deep red color with some browning on the edges, deep hue, lovely fruit and spice aromas and tastes, mild tannins still holding very well, hints of earth and mushrooms, long, long finish with interesting taste notes. Showing a bit of age, but still a lovely wine. 4*.

Regards, Bob

PS: Thanks for grabbing the Open Mike on this wine; we visited Vacqueyras several years ago, not a very pretty town and at that time very little effort to push their wines. I've always liked that distinctive taste, which persisted in last night's example. I wonder how much longer it would have lasted if you hadn't reminded me of its existence? B.

WTN: '01 Bacqueyras by Feraud-Brunel

by wrcstl » Fri Aug 04, 2006 9:29 pm

TN: '01 Vacqueyras Feraud-Brunel

Wife is out of town so I bought a delmonico steak (not allowed but one steak every 2 months but if you won't tell I won't) and opened the wine.

First glass at opening: A berry nose with some forrest floor (sous bois), love a chance for a TN with that word. Ruby color. Soft on the palate, very classy with subtle dark red fuit, med body and relatively long finish. A tartness on the palate behind cotton tannins.

Second glass after 30-45 minutes: Fruit sweetend and rounded out. Seemed to loose the tartness but still tannins but somewhat diminished.

Third glass with the steak, about 1 1/2 hours from opening: Now it is singing. Nothing seemed out of balance, great fruit but some tannins still present. A great match for the steak.

Conclusions 1) Very nice wine 2) May improve with another 1-2 years, which is expected from such an excellent year 3) The wine is not huge and is best with food. 4) For $25 I know where there is a few more bottle and will pick them up tomorrow. If I had a point on my head it would be a 91 or maybe ***1/2 our of5 or maybe B+ or more likely just a really nice drink. 5) Decant young wines, not old ones.

WTN: C.A.V.C.D.R. 2001 Vacqueyras

by Robin Garr » Fri Aug 04, 2006 11:15 pm

<table border="0" align="right" width="170"><tr><td><img src="http://www.wineloverspage.com/graphics1/vacq0804.jpg" border="1" align="right"></td></tr></table>Vacqueyras 2001 - Grabbing the Open Mike

Walt, thanks for grabbing the Open Mike ... I think this new idea is going to be a lot of fun, if we can keep it rolling with folks posting wines-to-taste in advance with the idea of others grabbing the same or similar wine to compare.

I thought I had a Kermit Vacqueyras here, but wrong-o, so I raced out to the big-box wine shop this afternoon and found exactly one in stock - happily, a 2001. The oddity about it is that, at first glance, the label didn't seem to disclose a producer - all it shows is "<b>Vacqueyras 2001</b>." Weird. I had to squint at the fine print at the bottom of the label to spot the very cryptic "<I>C.A.V.C.D.R. a Vacqueyras (Vaucluse) France</i>." Whaaa? A cooperative producer, I'm guessing. "<i>Cooperative Associacion Vignobles des Cotes-du-Rhone</I>"? Hell, I don't speak French. Something like that, though, I guess.

Pulled the cork, and things got even more confusing: It's got a swishy logo and the wording "Vignerons de Caractere, www.vigneronsdecaractere.com." Naturally I surfed straight to the site, a fairly slick production, entirely in French. I skimmed it very quickly with my very fractured French, and there's definitely a Vacqueyras connection - and also some references to an 11th century poet, Raimbaut, who seems to be an important figure in the village's history. Anybody who's more fluent in Franch than I am is welcome to dig into it and report.

A couple of factoids: Vacqueyras is one of the many Cotes-du-Rhone villages that lie along the foothills of Mont Ventoux, above and east of Chateauneuf-du-Pape; Vacqueyras is a pretty village just at the foot of the landmark <i>Dentelles de Montmirail</i>, a striking row of outcroppings that someone thought looked like lace (<i>dentelles</i>). Vacqueyras is one of the relatively small number (Gigondas being one of the other most familiar) that may put the village name on the label as an AOC without "Cotes-du-Rhone." It's pronounced "Vah-kay-rahss" with the final S sounded (because it comes from Provencal), and the permitted grapes are essentially the same as the 13 of Chateauneuf, although Grenache typically dominates the wines, with Syrah and Mourvedre as other frequent players.

Getting to it, finally, here's the WTN. Darn nice wine!

C.A.V.C.D.R. 2001 Vacqueyras ($17.99)

Very dark garnet, with a clear edge, showing no signs of aging. It's still fresh on the nose and palate, too: Aromas of red berries and fragrant black pepper; mouth-filling, bright red fruit and snappy acidity on the palate. Tannins aren't evident at first, but I get a little soft raspy quality after a while in the glass, very much secondary to juicy fruit and a lingering lemon-squirt of acidity. Very good wine indeed, and no complaints at this price. U.S. importer: Wine Adventures Inc., West Des Moines, Iowa. (Aug. 4, 2006)

<B>FOOD MATCH:</b> Fine with veal burgers sandwiched with fresh beefsteak tomato on <i>ciabbata</i>.

WTN: 2001 Domaine la Bouissiere Vacqueyras; G & T Faravel; 14.5% alc.; $13 last year. Front label illustration shows les Dentelles de Montmirail that Robin mentioned in his write-up.

Opened this last eve at an outdoor concert and served it with picnic fare. In retrospect, a mistake - but, oh what a glorious mistake!

Medium garnet with slight pinking at the rim. This was huge (in an Old World sort of way), and it put more than a few CdPs to shame. Just a hint of dark fruits and bacon on the nose. Sous bois and dark red fruits on entry. Very tart with some unresloved tannins and earthiness midpalate (I think this would be a Paul B. kind of wine!). Glorious finish with ripe tannins remaining in the mouth for a minute or so! The other people in our party did not warm up to it, but I managed to contemplate its evolution in the glass over the course of an hour or so.

Retasted it this evening after 24 hours of open time. Much the same as last night except that a slight alcohol burn appears in the nose along with enhanced meaty aromas. Also some volatile acidity appears on the palate along with some serious pepper flavors! This could have used at least another year or so in the cellar. It's my only bottle; alas, I'll never know what it could have become!

Actually went back to pick up a couple more bottles of the Feraud-Brunel and it was not $25, only $16.20 when included in a mixed case purchase. Also stumbled onto '99 Pegau for $29 so it was not hard to put a case together.

WTN: Domaine des Amouriers Vacqueyras 2001

by OW Holmes » Sun Aug 06, 2006 9:46 pm

WTN: 2001 Domaine des Amouriers
Really not a tasting note. I decided to give the 01 a try notwithstanding the fact that I had read on some board that it was not ready. So I took it north with me for the weekend while troutfishing, and opened it after a sparkling afternoon on the troutsteam that was mildly productive.
I really wanted to like this wine. And it had most of the right stuff. Dark fruit, a little spice, a touch of garrigue, rhone funk, and tannins - unfortunately really big tannins that clamped down on the finish. Very dark wine, overextracted, low acid, and a bit disjointed. Totally lacking in finesse. I have had numerous CdRs that I considered a lot more pleasurable.
So, I opened a Perrin Reserve CdR 2003 and let the rest of the bottle sit for 24 hours, trying it again tonight. Now a bit raiseney, tannins still present, not pleasurable at all. I am hoping it is an off bottle since I have another one.
I cannot recall why I bought this pair.
In any event, it was fun to participate in the Open Mike. I would not have opened this one for a couple more years without the prod, and would have been similarly disappointed, I am sure.

I too enjoyed participating in this weekends Open Mike! Thanks to everyone for the invitation.

WTN: `00 Rasteau "Les Blovac"--Santa Duc Selections, Yves Gras winemaker.

This CdR appellation is pretty close to Vacqueyras and Gigondas. The area is well-known for its vin doux naturel (grenache). Opened for 4 hours and decanted--Grenache 70%, Syrah 15%, Mourvedre 15%.
Some sediment, 14% alc, natural cork.

C. Medium ruby, just a hint of bricking."Also some pale cherry tones" was my better halfs comment. Very nice viscousity here.

N. Earthy, full-bodied aromas. Cherry, plum, tar, spice and blackberry. Gets meaty with time and was a tad more funky after 24 hrs! Nice.

P. Initial mouthfeel entry is cherry, soft tannins and earthyness. Very tasty and like the hint of ripeness. White pepper, plum and expresso. " I like the balance and texture, put this in a chateauneuf flight".
Yup, rich and excellent body and found some leathery tones after an hour. Good rec from my favourite winestore!

** after 24 hrs, some dusty tannins still prevail and more cherry and black fruits. No going downhill overnight.

Cost was $ 18.00 Cdn.
Food,breaded chicken scallopini w. tomato/swiss cheese salad.

I would like to add the following notes on an elderly CdP that I shared with the staff at Rics Grill, we are in the Rhone Valley!!

WTN: `91 Chateauneuf du Pape--Ch de la Gardine.

Colour had an ambre rim, some depth left in the centre, sort of a faded ruby. The nose was barnyard/garrigue, brambles, bacon, herbal with faded fruit. Not so elegant on the palate anymore, sediment noted. Prunes, licorice, pepper and bit barnyardy. Thought it would be a good idea for the serving staff to taste a mature wine!! Well, a few liked it. In actual fact, a previous bottle was shot so this did try to show up. Have a nice day. Cheers.

Dave, I wasn't around much this weekend or I might have given into the temptation to join you in your tragedy by opening my orphan 01 Boussiere Gigondas which would have been particularly sucky since I had three of these to start with, drank a first to get a sense of it, realized they were way too young, then shortly thereafter killed another infant when I sent my husband to the cellar for a Brusset. Needless to say, his French is lousy....
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Jenise:

Ah, but I thank you for your comment vis-a-vis the 2001 Bouissiere Gigondas. I've a trey of those and will learn from your experience by holding off on them for a while. BTW, I've also had very good results from Bouissiere in their CdR.

As a few people are tasting Vacqueyras over on Wine Focus this month, thought I would bump this one up. Have just opened an `03 from Brotte, the Vacqueyras Bouvencourt so will post TN later.
Some interesting notes here.
