Alsace travel recommendations

by rhunker » Sat Aug 19, 2006 1:49 pm

In early Oct I will be traveling the Alsace Wine Route. Any recommendations on "do not miss" towns, wineries. Also, any suggestions on B&B type places to stay? I plan to spend at least 3-4 days in the area. Any information would be much appreciated.

Haven't been there in over forty years, but highly recommend Tom Stevenson's book recently revised.

Thank you. As soon as I think I've surfed and found everything there is to find, I find something new. I've downloaded what I can and will purchase his updated book. Good stuff....

i think that eguisheim is a must see place - small, old, quaint. there is a good winery on the east side near the public lot that had two great Muscats - but esp the reserve. nearly every winery and restaurant has muscat - even though it is only a couple of per cent of the areas production. i drank it pretty much every day. you have trouble finding it in the US.

I like colmar as a fairly central place to stay; but you may prefer something smaller. i like the restaurant du marche there - it is on the place de cathedral.

i found a hotel in michelin i would go back to - forget the name - about 2 blocks from the petit veneuse that has cheap covered parking. this is important as you cannot easily park on the streets.
