An amazing Pinot Noir for $10

by michael dietrich » Mon Aug 21, 2006 1:14 am

I am a retailer here in Oregon. I got to taste a couple weeks ago this Greenstone Point Pinot Noir '04. I was amazed at how good this wine was. It tastes and smells like very good Pinot. It shows more raspberry fruit profile and is very well balanced. Ususally $10 Pinot tastes like nothing. And by the way, it is from New Zealand.

Part of what I do is try to find the best deals for the price. I have not been able to find any Oregon Pinot for $10 that smells and tastes like Pinot Noir. I have found 1 other but it is from California called Steel Creek. I start to find some really nice Oregon Pinots starting about $15.

There was an article in the Washington Post on New Zealand Pinots today. Look it up onhttp://www.washingtonpost.com under Food and Dining.

What I think is funny is that Greenstone Point is made by the winemaker from Sherwood who was in the article.

Actually, I think that's great. I know the writer a little bit. He's a good guy. I will make a point of looking for both wines.

I can relate to that. I tend to think that most Oregon wines are overpriced a bit.

Has anyone run into this on the East coast?

Was wonder the same thing. Haven't seen it, and noticed that the Huntington Beach outfit didn't have it either.

It appears that the full name is Sherwood Estate Greenstone Point Pinot Noir '04. Is that right?

It is my understanding that this is a separate label but is made by the winemaker at Sherwood. The importer is Grape Expectations out of Emeryville, CA.
