Opinion request: 1997 Jean Grivot Clos de Vougeot

by Karl Wee » Tue Aug 29, 2006 9:56 pm

Hi all,

I'm thinking about opening one of only two bottles. What do y'all think? I don't mind if the answer is "wait another lifetime" so fire away...

I have to say, though, my experience with the 1997 vintage seems a lot more positive than some. I've opened many regional, village and 1er cru bottles and had basically no duds -- by sticking to the good producers and well-stored bottles. It would be a shame if the grands crus were an exception to this pattern. (The wines don't have much stuffing, but they have beautiful bright fruit and balance.)

Any opinions would be appreciated.

I'm not an expert. But I'll say:
I've liked the couple Grivot CdVs I've tried.
I'm not up on 1997, but I have had some nice ones. But even the best (Roumier Musigny) seem pretty ready.
Better to try one now and say "oops too early" that try both too late.

I had the '96 Clos de Vougeot from Raphet in November of last year and it was at peak, and drinking very well. That experience doesn't say much about '97, or Grivot, but I wouldn't wait too much longer.
