Compared to the incumbent, he's a statesman.
Actually, it's arguable that Nixon was our last liberal president. He supported wage and price controls, opened China, instituted food stamps and actually would have pushed for a guaranteed minimum income for all Americans if that little Watergate thing hadn't come up.
