One of the many new arrivals downtown, apparently a library release with change of ownership whatever. I also purchased the `95 Auslese plus the `97 Auslese.
This `91 was a steal for $21 Cdn, AP# 2 590 080-6-92. Very wet stained cork, some mould when cutting off the foil. Served initially quite chilled, 8% alc.
The colour is a light/medium lemon but no sign of any gold.
On the nose we found mineral, hint of petrol, some ripe white stone-fruit, citrus, ripe apple peelings.
Quite intense, a very good example of an aged Riesling I`d say.
The initial entry on the palate was not too sweet, still showing zippy puckery citrus tones on the finish. Good mid-palate, excellent acidity, no sign of decline. Subtle tropical fruit after an hour or so, not so much on day 2. Mineral/slate tones typical I think, seems to have held the freshness somewhat. "Lemon tones prevalent on a finish that is not honeyed" from across the table. White stone-fruit, no pineapple though. Held up nicely over night, food was pork scallopini with Thai noodle salad.
Terrific wine from Stephan Ehlen`s dad! Have to think this will last a while longer in the cellar?
