Fill in the blank: "You know you’re a wine geek if ..."

by Robin Garr » Fri May 04, 2012 10:31 am

Someone started a Facebook group titled "You know you’re a wine geek if ..." It has been busy for the past couple of days, with some familiar faces turning up, some from the distant past, posting dozens of jewels like these.

You always keep a wine glass stored in your trunk "just in case"

You grab the Wine List and you start referencing online sites to find the best QPR.

You know you have that bottle somewhere, you dig into your cellar and ... what's this? Do I really have one bottle of this?

‎...people add you to every internet group with the word "wine" in the title.

You're in a restaurant, grab the wine list, and instantly start doing the math of what their bottle cost is.

Let’s do our own! Give us your best shots that finish the sentence, “You know you’re a wine geek if ... “

You keep a corkscrew in your glove box.
Other people's wine glasses are never clean enough.

The one I entered, by the way, had to do with "You know you're a wine geek if you spend dinner Googling for some obscure bit you spotted on the wine label."

Of course most wine geeks I know, including myself, are beer geeks too. (great thread though!)

You reflexively swirl water glasses (which you're holding by the base).

You're out jogging, you run next to a flower bed and the smell of the flowers, combined with the smell of your own sweat, reminds you of a claret you had the other week.

Whenever you see/hear a reference to a specific year, regardless of context, your brain's first reaction is whether or not it was a good vintage and where.

I do this! And for some reason, I'm always surprised it's not wine when I drink it. A momentary lapse of reason.

I don't go as far as that, but I do sometimes drink mineral water out of Burgundy wine glasses. Much more refreshing that way.

...you use terms like "full-bodied" and "balanced" to describe your mouthwash.

...you've ever tried to "un-screw" your significant other.

...you know the name of every chateau in Bordeaux but can't remember your social security number.

...you talk about terroir even when it comes to soft drinks.

I too swirl a water glass....

... I know I have a corkscrew around somewhere but lost it several years ago. Now I have a bottle with a CORK in it. Oh, woe...

This one is interesting. It obviously refers to wine geeks. However I've also noticed that people who are just beginning to get into wine or who only know a tiny bit about wine get a bit too overanxious to swirl the wine even if we're drinking dreck out of thick useless stems at some godawful non-wine friendly restaurant. I'm trying to choke the stuff down without grimacing and they think they 'should' swirl because it's wine.

Well, jeez, just don't go out to dinner with me! :)

I have found myself swirling water on one or two- oh, make it 800- occasions.

not a fill in the blank, but my definition of a wine geek comes from Bill Spohn (I'm 99% sure, there's 0.9% chance it was the other Bill who posts on AFW, and a 0.1% chance I totally forgot who it was). Out for a business dinner, on other person's expense account, they order some serious Bdx (like an '82 1st or Super Second). It comes, everything they want and more. Just outstanding Bordeaux. Fantastic, delicious. So good that when bottle is emptied, host orders another. Bill is appalled, any geek would want to try another wine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That story spoke to me.

I have always thought of myself as a wine geek, so do my kids..This thread is givng me pause, though..I run 30-40 miles/week, love to smell the flowers along the way, heaven knows I sweat a lot..But, I have never been reminded of a claret, or any other wine, for that matter, while smelling the flowers and my sweat..Also, I remember a corporate dinner, sitting next to my company's CEO when Michael asked me what I thought of a Cal cult cab on the wine list and should we order some? I heartilly said yes ..the wine was terrific and when he asked me if we should order some more, I enthusiastically said yes, never once giving a thought to trying another wine
Guess I 'll have to turn in my geek card and confess that I don't swirl water glasses either

You want to suggest specific wines to complete strangers in the wine section of the grocery store.

In a restaurant you sometimes select the wine you want to drink first and then pair an entree with it.

You are "arguing" at a tasting as to whether that red Burgundy exhibited clove or pepper.

(The swirling water glasses reminded me of when I first took skiing lessons in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The instuctor kept drilling it into us to keep our knees bent. We were standing around drinking German beer that evening and I realized that I was standing with my knees bent!)

People you do not even know at work ask you for wine recommendations (a regular occurence for me at work in the run up to any major food holiday).
