Surprise: Bazelet HaGolan 2000 still alive

by Jan Schultink » Sat Jul 21, 2012 3:59 pm

  • 2000 Bazelet Hagolan Cabernet Sauvignon Millennium Reserve - Israel, Galilee, Golan Heights (7/21/2012)
What a surprise, this bottle should have been washed down the toilet. Pale red orange in color. Completely fresh red fruit backed up with coffee, mint, pine, with a refreshing acidity, leading to a long and complex finish. Very much alive. (90 pts.)

Hi Jan,

Indeed a surprise considering that Rogov z"l drinking windows for Bazelet reserves were typically no more than 6-7 years from vintage. Is this the same wine as the one reviewed in his last vertical tasting - viewtopic.php?f=29&t=25012&p=216510 ??

best,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Reading the TN, it can't be :-) The label said "Millennium Reserve" not just "Reserve".

Best,
Jan

Hi Jan,

Did they make both a "Millenium Reserve" and a "Reserve" in 2000? Regardless, Google fished up the following note from a HaAretz article published in 2002, note the projected drinking window - http://www.haaretz.com/culture/food-win ... rm-1.28447

Bazelet Hagolan, Cabernet Sauvignon, Millennium Reserve, 2000: Medium- to full-bodied, deep ruby toward purple, offers generous and concentrated layers of currants, berries, mint and minerals, all with a long aftertaste on which you will feel appealing mineral and earthy flavors and aromas. Overall good balance between still firm tannins, oak and fruits. Best drinking 2003-2006. NIS 125. Score 89.

cheers,

Mike

That must be the bottle. I stand by my blind tasting note :-) "Blind" in a sense that I did not see these notes before writing mine...
