Wine Focus for November! Let's have your proposals

by Robin Garr » Sat Oct 27, 2012 1:50 pm

Nov. 1 is coming right up! New month starts on Thursday. Up Over, we're moving toward winter, and the holiday season is coming up all over. Let's hear your ideas!

How about Pinot Noir? I'm sure it has been done before, perhaps could be limited to everywhere except Burgundy for a narrower focus? Although, I'm sure I will have some haters for that suggestion!

Or another idea would be German and Austrian red wines, if anyone is up for that?

Joy, you won't get much hating on Pinot Noir in these parts! That's not a bad idea, with the side note that we did Pinot Noir Outside Burgundy about 18 months ago. I'd say that's long enough for a repeat. Or maybe just do World Pinot Noir and take on all comers? Or Pinot Noir QPR, inviting folks to look for the best buys in Pinot from anywhere around the world?

Here's a link to the last previous outing.

German and Austrian reds, and to some extent Cabernet Franc, are fun, but our experience with Wine Focus is that to get broad international participation, we need a topic that's interesting and easy to find at reasonable prices at wine shops all over. Sadly, I can't get more than a handful of those even in Louisville, a medium-size metro with pretty good wine selection. (Used to be better before wine distributorships got so tightly integrated.)

Cabernet franc is one of my favourite grape varieties, so no problems about doing that again.

I would like to do Merlot sometime though I like the variety less than CF on its own but it does contribute to some stellar wines when there is some CF and CS in the blend.

Pinot Noir is never a problem.

I would love to do Austrian and German reds, if there were not an availability problem even here. There are some remote specialist dealers who do Austrians but I have rarely seen a German red here even though the Ahr valley is only some 2 hours fast drive away.

Good analysis, Tim. Let's reserve the less available varieties for Open Mike or even just regular discussion topics. Merlot - one of these days! I like the idea of Pinot especially because of its versatility at the table, with winter and the holiday season coming up.

What say you all to "Value Pinot Noir," leaving the exact definition of "value" wide open for individual judgement?

Given that value pinot noir tends to be one of THE worst values around I would vote a strong no on the value prefix at a minimum.

Cab Franc is delicious with turkey by the way, and since we always alllow blends using the focus grape it is a good way to get Salil to buy and open some Cheval Blanc!

I would prefer to drink good wine.

I'll always encourage more Cab Franc drinking. Would be perfectly happy with a Merlot theme as well (November is a nice time for RB Bordeaux... mmm, Pomerol...)

I agree with David. I have sampled some so-called "Value-driven" PNs (Chile, Argentina for example) at the store downtown and find most of them poor quality and not worth the money. I think Cab Franc blends a better subject, the Open Mike two yrs ago ran to 6/7 pages I believe?

I know I don't participate, but for my money, Gamay is the best red wine with turkey out there and it IS November.......

I've mentioned it before, but how about a Pinot Family reunion (key the banjo music...)

Pinot Meunier
St. Laurent
Pinot Blanc
Pinot Gris
Auxerrois to name a few.

Good turkey options too.

Cheers,
Bill

Well, I was thinking of "value" in the sense of "QPR," not "cheap." I generally don't even bother to buy South American Pinot at all, for example.

David, would you like to make the call? I'm torn between all of these and don't have a strong feeling.

Aw, crap, you're leaving it to him? I'll just wait for the suggestions for which Cheval Blanc I should be opening with him in Nov. :P

Just for fun, how about "Merlot & Cabernet Franc - two great tastes that go great together (or not)"

I suggest that because it covers a couple of folks' desired topics, opens up the playing field to blends (e.g. right bank Bordeaux) and leaves single variety of each still in play. We've done Gamay quite recently, and I honestly struggle with the idea of a Pinot Wine Focus, as Pinot is so darned prevalent on he board (really most boards) anyway! There's also the bonus that Salil will have to open a 1988 Cheval Blanc.

Thoughts?

Merlot/Cab Franc will definitely be an interesting topic - don't have any particular wine in mind yet, but it should be easy to find something that works.

As for the Pinot family, would white Pinots (Gris, Blanc, Auxerrois, etc.) be a possible way to make Bill's idea work for a future monthly theme? We could also make it white wines from grapes in the Pinot family, and then include some Blanc de Noirs sparklers that way.

I'm pretty sure we did Pinot Gris not that long ago, but perhaps we could work something like...Pinot Not Noir.
