WTN: Failla Syrah PhoenixRanch '04...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Jan 30, 2013 1:49 pm

Tried this the other night:
1. Failla Syrah PhoenixRanch/NapaVlly (14.8%; www.FaillaWines.com) EhrenJordanWineCellars/StHelena 2004: Very dark/near black color w/ slight browning; very strong roasted/smokey/coffee strong toasty/Fr.oak/charred very strong blackberry/Syrah/pungent some complex nose; soft very strong charred/toasty/Fr.oak strong blackberry/Syrah/boysenberry/spicy slight roasted/espresso/Rhonish/graphite flavor w/ some hard/drying tannins; very long strong charred/toasty/oak strong blackberry/Syrah/spicy/boysenberry light roasted/Rhonish/espresso/smokey finish w/ slightly hard/drying/tannic aftertaste; lots of pungent/Rhonish character and starting to dry out a bit but a lovely/complex/fully mature or beyond Syrah.

1. EhrenJordan makes some of the best Syrahs in Calif. Usually very Rhonish in character. I've always found his PhoenixRanch one of the best of the up-Vlly Syrahs but somewhat simpler than his QueSyrah or Estate/SonomaCoast Syrahs. This PhoenixRanch has really developed a nice Rhonish character w/ age in the btl. Lovely Syrah.
