Which Bordeaux to open soon?

by Jim Grow » Fri Feb 15, 2013 3:35 pm

I have just a few bottles of the following:

2000 Clos de Sarpe
2000 Calon-Segur
2003 La Vielle Cure
2003 Leoville Poyferre
2000 Pavie Decesse

most of a case of:

2005 Le Conseiller (very closed when tasted in 2010)
2009 Bard-Haut (full case I'm very eager to try)

Probably the first 4 wines are not ready but any opinions or tasting notes/decant time would be very appreciated.

I imagine the 2003s would be ready, and it would probably be a good idea to check in on them (especially the Vielle Cure - opinions on CT seem to agree), as the general opinion seems to be that their future is uncertain. The better 2000s still need more time (especially an old school one like Calon-Segur). I wouldn't hesitate to crack one of those 09s - the 2009s are drinking exceptionally well young, and are absolutely delicous - the structure is there, but they have so much fruit.

Selfish me says the 2003 Leoville Poyferre (I have a few bottles and haven't tried any), but, for your sake, I think it is best for you to finish up La Vielle Cure. Mine are long gone.

well, if you have a full case, I'd try the Barde-Haut to see if you like it!

After that, I'd probably aim for (in order)
2003 La Vieille Cure
2000 Clos de Sarpe
2000 Pavie Decesse
2003 Leoville Poyferre
2000 Calon Segur

I've generally lost faith in modern-styled RBs to go more than 10-15 years.

I would agree that the 2003 La Vieille Cure is ready to go (it was wide-open back in 2006, but I haven't tried it since then)...

Thanks all for your input. I'll definitely open the Bard-Haut first and the Leoville next and probably the Pavie Decesse when I am going to a big wine dinner.
