Donnhoff Riesling Auslese Question

by Tom Troiano » Sat Mar 16, 2013 4:39 pm

2011 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese
2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese

How long do these need to cellar? What is the window of drinkability?

Thanks!

Drink now to 2014. Then cellar for 10 years and drink forever.

That's what I was afraid of. Hard decision! Thanks.

I have little experience with Dönnhoff wines.
However, the Dönnhoff Auslese wines I had from the vintages 95, 96, 97 and 98 did not improve with cellaring.
That's why I've stopped buying Dönnhoff wines.

Heh...I have had exactly the opposite result. The '01 auslesen (from 375 ml) are just starting to open up, and are glorious and complex. The '97s (Hermannshohle specifically) drink like a dream.

I will say that I am no fan of the '96s, but most of mine are compromised.

It's a question that touches on the religious. I would say if a young Dönnhoff Auslese gives you all you want from a wine, drink it.
