WTN: VignettiMassa Derthona '10...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sat Apr 27, 2013 9:24 pm

Shared this btl w/ the folks at ArroyoVino this afternoon. They were so taken by it that there was only a third of a btl left when I departed:
1. VignettiMassa Derthona (100% Timorasso; 14%; www.PortoVinoItaliano.com; Buffalo/NY) MarcaObertenga/Monleale/Piemonte 2010: Med.gold color; very fragrant/perfumed/exotic strong R-like/Mosel valve oil/floral honeyed/carnations almost Muscat-intense beautiful nose; fairly tart very spicy/floral/carnations/R-like/honeyed bit Mosel valve oil rich/lush/textured slight earthy very exotic flavor; very long/lingering fairly tart but rich/lush/textured exotic/floral/carnations/apple blossoms/spicy rather R-like/floral finish; much like a R but the texture/mouth-feel of a Chard; some like an old DavidBruce WhiteRiesling w/o the oak; a stunning Piemonte white. $24.00 (DaVino)

A wee BloodyPulpit: Timorasso is an indigenous variety from the province of Allesandro in the ColliTortonesi of the Piemonte. It was one time big in the area but the phylloxera blight led to much planting of Cortese, a more reliable workhouse white. It was rescued from near extinction by WalterMassa and is now up nearly 24 acres. I was first exposed to Timorasso some 5 yrs ago by DarrellCorti. I've had some 4-5 since then, but this one by Massa is, by far, the best of the bunch. A very exotic variety they should be planting the length & breadth of California.

Tom - A belated thank you for the note. I thought that the 2009 edition was very good, but have not tried the 2010 version. The Massa reds (Barbera, Croatina) have also been quite good in my experience.

Alas, Andrew...never seen his reds around...but would love to try his Croatina someday.
