In Israel, on the prowl for pinot noir

by YoelA » Sun May 05, 2013 12:00 pm

Unfortuntely I did not hear of the large tasting at the Tel Aviv nemal until the day after it was over. A bummer!

This time i am looking for a bottle of Gvaot pinot noir in Tel Aviv. Haven't yet found it but have come across 2010 Vitkin and 2008 Avidan, also 2010 Livni. Was not crazy about the 2009 Livni; can anyone compare the Vitkin, Avidan and Gvaot (or even 2010 Livni)?

yoel, youd ask gabriel on livni, he once mentioned that one livni pinot noir was good. Gvaot PN gets all the press. Being that im not a napa rat, im not very familier with PN, prob had more Zinfandel's out in cali than PN.

Gabriel was right on the money! He suggested I go to the wine shop at 200 Ben Yehuda and they did have the Gvaot pinot noir there, along with a better price for Ramot Naftaly barbera than anywhere else, so I bought both. I had the Livni last year but did not like it as much as Gabriel - did not have the PN character that I like. Still have a bottle of 2008 Ella Valley PN that I got last year, for trying sometime.

Just a note that after i had fnished buying and was still maintaining self-control I cam across a wine store with some nice prices, including the best price on Vitkin PN that I had seen. But I managed to keep from buying a bottle. Wait till next year.
Store location - Tel Aviv, Ibn Gvirol across the street from the Cenntury tower (Migdal Meah).

Thoughts on 2009 Tishbi Pinot Noir & 2010 Galil Pinot Noir...

Thank you all the best

IMHO - pass on both. The Tishbi PN is really weak, and the Galil PN is burnt coffee, no complexity, and lacking balance.
