Nose cleansing

by JuliaB » Fri Jun 07, 2013 11:02 am

Last night I was with some wine newbie friends to taste and discuss wine. After explaining the reason that crackers are often served at tastings to cleanse the palate, one person asked what is used to cleanse the nose. I read that there is something to sniff between tastes to refresh one's olfactory sense, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was. I've never seen it done. Do you know what it is?

TIA,
JuliaB

I've never heard of that, and can't imagine why it would be neccessary. Odors are by nature mostly volatile I'd think. There's no alcohol, no tannins. If the idea is to neutralize I'd assume plain air would be best.

I agree, Dale, and what I read was something really odd. I remember being very skeptical of it at the time, but now I can't remember what it was, or the source. Wish I had saved it to discuss here. You snooze you lose..or in the case, you sniff you lose.

Page Springs Cellars here in AZ has small dishes of coffee beans in the tasting room for this purpose.

From CT
Red 2008 Page Springs Cellars El Serrano
Tasting Room (Page Spring Cellars, AZ): Dark robust earth floor, cinnamon and light roast coffee.

(seriously, there are lots of TNs for winery, that's the only coffee one I saw)

Coffee beans!! That's it! Thanks, Doug and Gary!
That seems counterintuitive to me; wouldn't that strong, specific aroma linger? I guess I'll have to try it myself.

Thanks for solving the mystery.

I don't recall any coffee notes in that wine (I'm in their wine club and receive at least one bottle of the current vintage of El Serrano every year). But then, I haven't tasted El Serrano in the tasting room since about 2005, when they barely had a room, let alone a nose cleanser.
