Anyone familiar with Grgich Hills Cabernet?

by Jeff B » Sat Jun 08, 2013 12:42 pm

Just discovered a 1997 bottle that I must have bought and forgotten about. I don't know if it will have much life left at this point. Anyone ever try the '97?

Tonight is spaghetti night, so I plan on finally opening it to see what's in store. I'll report back with a tasting note.

Usually a typical style of Napa cab. 97 was a ripe vintage. If it's been stored properly the wine should be fine. Grigich in those days was not usually over the top and had good balance as a rule.

Thanks Lou. I'm excited to pull the cork.

Just to follow up with a brief tasting note...

The wine went well with the spaghetti. I was most impressed by the texture - still fairly tannic. The "fruit" tasted a bit absent, but I figured that might be the case. It was about what I expected. Let's give it 89 points. :)
