CSM--World's largest reisling producer!

by Jenise » Sat Jun 22, 2013 3:11 pm

I wasn't aware of this 'fact' until I read the article below:

WOODINVILLE, Wash. – Already the world’s largest producer of Riesling, Chateau Ste. Michelle stepped up its game in 2012 to craft more Riesling than ever.

In fact, Washington’s oldest winery made a cool 1.2 million cases of Riesling from last fall’s record harvest.

“That’s a lot of Riesling,” said Bob Bertheau, Chateau Ste. Michelle’s head winemaker.

Here’s how Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Riesling breaks down in 2012:
•Riesling, Columbia Valley: 898,000 cases
•Harvest Select Riesling, Columbia Valley: 210,000 cases
•Dry Riesling, Columbia Valley: 80,000 cases
•Eroica Riesling, Columbia Valley: 31,000
•Cold Creek Riesling, Columbia Valley, 4,600 cases

That’s 1,223,600 cases of Riesling. And this does not include 70,000 cases just released under the nationally distributed Anew Riesling or anything from Snoqualmie Vineyards or Columbia Crest, which last year combined for another 100,000-plus cases of wine.

While it’s a huge amount of wine – and the most Riesling that Chateau Ste. Michelle has ever made – it wasn’t actually a giant increase from 2011, when the team of Bertheau and white winemaker Wendy Stuckey produced 1.16 million cases.

I think it will come as a surprise to a lot of folks..I wd have thought that Columbia Crest's production wd have been higher..I tend to think of them as a high volume house more than I do CSM..CC tends to produce an ocean of chard

And sales reps in the trade still go around saying that Riesling doesn't sell.

At a restaurant near my hotel here in Singapore, the CSM Columbia Valley Riesling sells for $28/glass.
There behind the glass lies a real blade of grass. Be careful as you pass. Move along. Move along.

I didn't order it. I have had exactly one wine in 9 days so far. I can't stomach the criminal pricing.

Nah, just your standard unrestrained capitalism operating in short-term, quick-turn maximum profit mode.

Unrestrained capitalism as long as money keeps flowing into the pockets of the ruling oligarchy!

Huh?

Alcohol in general is prohibitively expensive in Singapore, not just in restaurants. That said I can get a great dinner for $10.

David, do you know Yixin Ong yixin.ong@kotselections.com who used to post a lot here and now runs a wine import business in Singapore? If you are still there, he might be good for a glass or three of wine.
