'11 Knapp Finger Lakes Riesling

by Carl Eppig » Sun Jul 14, 2013 2:45 pm

2011 Knapp, Finger Lakes, Riesling ($14.95 U.S.). Alcohol level: 11.5%. This wine offers citrus and apples on the nose and upfront. It has excellent structure with more fruit including ripe peaches, a touch of sweetness, and crisp acidity in the middle; and it finishes very nicely. We matched it with stuffed scallops, pilaf, and sliced tomatoes. Simply wonderful!!!

Sounds terrific Carl. Finger Lake wines are on my go-to list, have no experience with wines from the area at all.

Knapp doesn't get much attention but its Riesling is consistently good.

Agree. It is among the older Riesling vineyards in the region, and the winemaking is connected to the head winemaker at Glenora, the winery that owns Knapp.

We've been going through a supply of the 2012s lately. It show all the characteristics of previous bottlings including the 2011 above. Most recently we matched it boneless pork chops rubbed with Penseys' Pork Chop Seasoning and grilled over charcoal and hickory chips; with sides of baked sweet potato and nuked yellow and green zucchini. Great meal!

2013 Knapp, Finger Lakes, Riesling. This bright flavorful Riesling with lots of fruit has a clean start with a mild sweetness and finishes with a hint of citrus. We matched it with sautéed Maryland crab cakes from McKinnon's, and cooked Italian green beans and cherry tomatoes vinaigrette (both from our garden). Yum!

Great archive stuff Carl and crab cakes sound very appealing.

We thoroughly enjoyed another '13 tonight with our Easter Ham. Guests agreed with our choice.
