2003 Schloss Schonborn, Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg Kabinett (#2 04) 9.5% abv
I essentially passed on the 2003 German Rieslings, however I just could not resist this one in the bargain bin for $2. A touch of sulphur on the nose that dissipated with some air time. Ripe apricot and melon but that was about it. The wine lacked character/verve/focus/acidity and dare I say it was cloying. Not much in the way of finish. I enjoyed the 2001 and 2002s from this producer, but this 2003 was ...bleh!

Two Dollars? Hell, when life gives you 2003 German Riesling, make Weincreme with it!

Schloss Schonborn has not been a reliable prducer since the '70s. Every once in a while there are signs of a resurgance, then they fall right back down. It's too bad, as they have some marvelous vineyard sites.

David,
Thanks for your response.
The 01's and 02's from them that I have had quite possibly were a positive abberation as I found them to be very good to excellent Rheingau. This 03 was pretty awful and perhaps is more indicative of longer term inconsistency at this house that you cite. FWIW, I sampled one of their 2005's (don't recall vineyard) a few months back and while it was not terrible, it was quite ordinary.

What do you think of the 2005s? I liked a few, although didn't need to buy.
