Blow $5 on finding out what pickled date fronds from Guatemala taste like, that is.

I like pickled just-about-anything (including pigs feet), so couldn't resist this jar of date fronds found in a Hispanic-oriented supermarket in Lake Havasu last weekend. And what did we think? Don't put it on your bucket list. The flavor was dull--not much brine in the brine, that is--and the texture was just plain odd. Not bad, but not at all good either. Neither soft nor particularly crunchy either, just some sawdusty place in between. Wonder what they use them for, anyone know?

p.s. I know the jar shows twice. But I only uploaded it once, and only one pic by that number shows up when I go back to view it in Edit mode, so no idea why!

Hey, everyone knows Honduras makes the best pickled date palms. Those Guatamalan things just don't cut it. :D

And don't they kinda remind you of knobbly little albino baby octopi?

Yeah. We toyed with taking the rest down to the Lake and distributing them like something "just washed up". It's not like anybody, upon finding them, would look at them and go, "not to worry, those are just Guatemalan date fronds."
