Italy’s “Alcatraz” (Gorgona) off the coast of Tuscany, Italy in collaboration with Marchesi dè Frescobaldi is releasing a wine to the US called Gorgona, a white blend made from Vermentino and Ansonica (Inzolia) grapes. The origins of winemaking in prison most likely goes back as far as the prison system itself. “Prison wine” aka “jailhouse hooch”, “chicha”, “chalk”, “pruno” or ”toilet wine” most likely (well at a retail price of over $60, I hope anyway) doesn’t even come close to the quality of this wine.
