Yes, Bob, I found it at a caviste in Pont-l'Évêque. Cavistes often have a good choice of French wines from usually unfamiliar estates but prices rather surprisingly are mostly higher than at Belgian cavistes for better known estates and much higher than at the estates themselves. Supermarkets practice keen prices but the choice is mostly much less interesting apart from for Bordeaux. As for "foreign" wines there are internet order resources in France but at VERY high prices + delivery charges :( .

I would place the single grape wines of Cline as great values. I believe their Roussanne and Viognier come from some of the oldest vines in CA. Their Mouvedre, and Carignane are very cellarable and when old, down right tasty. This last week I opened a 1997 small berry Mouvedre. The alcohol was stated as 14 %. The wine was soft, food friendly and delicious. The alcohol and tannins were not overpowering. The wonderful intense yet soft lovely berry flavors remained. I glad that over the years I have purchased a number of bottles of these two reds to put down. I never have been disappointed!

I was always a fan of the Cline "Ancient Vines" series.

2012 Treleaven Gewurztraminer

by Dan Smothergill » Thu Jul 03, 2014 10:26 am

We were visiting wineries on the east side of Cayuga Lake the other day. Actually they are few compared to the other side. One of the oldest is King Ferry. Each time visiting there we seem to find one terrific wine and this time it was the 2012 Treleaven Gewurztraminer. Making Gewurztraminer myself has made me more critical of it and, frankly, not many from the Finger Lakes have struck me as all that good for the price lately. This one is clearly an exception. As someone in the tasting room said, it explodes in the mouth with harmonious flavors of grapefruit, orange and nectarine against a flowery background. I'll be getting more. $17.

2011 Cowan Cellars Rosé of Mourvedre over the past few nights was delightful: delicately fruity, mineral-tinged with a lovely savory edge. Bought from FlJim for $19, it represents (as all his wines do) a solid value in today's marketplace. Well done, Jim!

The 2007 Cline "Ancient Vines" maybe the best QPR Zinfandel that I have ever tasted. That was a delicious wine.

I agree with Sam and David (that's the name of a fruit purveyor isn't it?) I went to a tasting of wines being considered for the wine list at an Officer's Club in Germany hoping to have some nice wines. They were pretty mediocre except for the Cline Zinfandel which I liked.

2010 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Granges - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon - (€9)
Just over two years ago I wrote that this wine
was all I want from an entry level Chinon; medium bodied, fresh and quaffable with attractive red fruit, hints of elegant forestal greenness and leather, lively acidity and decent length with a touch of firmness on the finish. It was delicious now but I know from experience that this cuvée can acquire an extra dimension of complexity with some age while retaining freshness and fun; 16/20 QPR.

The wine has filled out and darkened somewhat but still remains "fun" at a cool temperature with an outdoors cold meal. This cuvée is supposed to be for young drinking but I have experience of a 2000 which aged really gracefully for 8 years+. I reckon that this 2010 has even better potential; my last bottle, alas. Very good.QPR!!

Great to see another positive Baudry note, Tim. Guess I should open my remaining entry-level `09 Domaine.

One of the best QPRs that I've had in a while, and a great summer wine:

2013 Azienda Agricola Le Fraghe Bardolino DOC Chiaretto Rodòn
Blend of Corvina and Rondinella. Medium-bodied, fresh, with good acidity; saline, mineral, floral; with red berry and watermelon notes. Very good+. Excellent QPR for $15.

Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine sur lie Clos du Poyet Vieilles Vignes 2012 - Domaine Pierre Luneau - Alc.12% - (<€5)

This is a very nice refreshing bone dry Muscadet with a good balance of mildly citrus fruit, stony minerals, lively but non-astringent acidity, some underlying roundness and saline backbone. I have had Muscadet with more sharply defined mineral character but this one is excellent value at its modest price (<€5) and I will buy more.

Where else other than Muscadet and Gros Plant can one find white wine with such a winning combination of crisp freshness, simple stylishness and friendly prices?

2011 Chidaine Touraine Rouge. A blend of Cot, Cab Franc, and Pineau D'Aunise. $14 at Ordinaire Wine Bar in Oakland, but I saw it for cheaper on line.

Delicious natural wine made from biodynamic grapes. Definitely has that natural wine character profile, but very clean (no brett). Red plum skin, earth, very high toned character. Refreshing, yet deep purple and red fruit. What a lovely summer quaffer!

I seem to be seeing several simple but highly enjoyable Faugères like this one, a Syrah dominated blend.

2011 Domaine de Moncèze Faugères - France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Faugères (7/29/2014)
This vigorous wine shows a delightful absence of artifice and even quite a bit of rusticity but of an honest sort which IMO goes very well which burgeoning dark fruit strongly laced with anise, liquorice and Mediterranean herbs. Trying to find out more about this wine, I discovered some old Foire aux Vins offers for c.€4 which was less than half what I paid at a city centre wine merchant but even so I have no grumbles at all about value. I would snap up a dozen if I saw it on offer now at c.€4.

I also have in my cellar some much more polished, almost N.Rhône-like, Faugères from Alquier but his top cuvées cost around €20.

Jeez...You Europeans have such BARGAINS when it comes to rustic but delicious country wines! A $6 California wine would be almost universally awful industrial fruit juice. :?

Tim is fortunate to live in a new area, Normandy, that seems to have some good wine stores nearby with owners and innovative buying.
Brian. Prices here in AB, nothing decent under $15/16 Cdn

I have been looking forward to some Muscadet notes now that you live closer to the Loire :D .

We opened another bottle of that Muscadet last night; it is really very good :D and would still be an excellent buy at close to double the price.

That is an excellent link. However I struggled to dig deeper in spite of being a subscriber. Perhaps I got my username or password wrong :? .

Tim, I see Landron mentioned in the list. Have you ever come across this domaine, also Pierre de la Grange?

Bob, I don't think I've ever had those.

One of the great things about a forum like this is that other people's enthusiasm for Muscadet is stimulating mine with the result that I am seeking them out more and more :D .

Here is another excellent value wine from Languedoc, made from Carignan 40%, Syrah 30% Grenache 20% and Mourvèdre 10%, with alcohol at 14.5%. I didn't note the exact price but I think it was around €9.

  • 2010 Signatures du Sud Corbières Château Les Inferets - France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières (8/8/2014)
I was previously unaware of Signatures du Sud but this, like a recent Faugères (Domaine de Moncèze above), is excellent of its kind. Typically deep colour for the region and an expressive nose full Mediterranean herbs and red fruit in the background. The quite full palate was both lively and complex with symphony of herbs to the fore with noticeable liquorice notes and a firm but caressing structure. Very good.

TN: 2013 Kühling-Gillot Nierstein Riesling trocken

by win_fried » Sat Aug 16, 2014 4:51 am

It is said that 2013 was a difficult vintage in Germany. Last night we had a "village wine" though, which is a winner at 16.5€.

2013 Kühling-Gillot Nierstein Riesling trocken
Light yellow. Fresh, restrained nose of white fruit. On the palate white peach, creamy mouthfeel, salty, minerally and acidic with hints of white tobacco. Elegant with surprisingly long finish.

Just what I like! I need to order a mixed case of trocken Riesling from Germany, if I can find an internet seller who does cross-border deliveries economically. Here in France, the specialised media, e.g. RVF, are beginning to show some interest in German Riesling but seem years behind the times in only concentrating on prädikat wines with RS.
