One dud and one star here.

2000 Azienda Agricola Capannelle Solare IGT Toscana
80% Sangiovese/20% Malvasia Nera. Stony/peppery nose. Full-bodied, moderately acidic, quite leathery and woody; also gamy; with some sour cherry, dried herbal, and red licorice notes in the background. The oak hasn’t integrated with the fruit well, however, and it did not improve over a couple of hours. Mediocre; I was expecting better.

1998 Avignonesi-Capannelle 50 & 50 IGT Toscana
50% Merlot from Avignonesi and 50% Sangiovese from Capannelle. Opened about 45 minutes beforehand, but needed another half hour or so to come together in the glass, where it initially seemed way too oaky. Cherries, cedar, spices, and roast beef on the nose. Full, quite smooth in texture, with obvious barrique influence; spicy, slightly bitter, with flavors of roasted dark fruits, comparatively fresher raspberries, dark chocolate, damp earth, and coffee. Excellent.

FWIW, I've enjoyed Capannelle's Chianti Classico Riserva (which is much more traditionally styled) in the past, but have not had it recently.
