2015 Carl Loewen Riesling 1896 - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (6/16/2017)
Feinherb style Riesling that combines classic Mosel tree fruit, balanced acidity and just a touch of residual unmentionable to add depth to the fruit and a further touch of richness on the palate. It's drinking fabulously now. Aging? Sure. Not sure I have that kind of patience though. This is a wonderful expression of some very old, un-grafted vines in the middle-Mosel.

This sounds great, though it's rather dear.
Have you had the trocken 1896 ?

Terry tells us: “This is a DRY wine, while the other is a very dry wine; they are both marvelous but one of them is superb". — Terry Theise

I had both in the span of a few days, then had the 2016 edition of both on Tuesday at the Theise portfolio tasting. The Trocken is wonderful as well, and seriously dry. If I were short of funds I would buy the 2015 Trocken.

In 2016 the Feinherb is again amazing, and outclasses the Trocken in my opinion. That being said, there is a 2016 Loewen Maximiner Klosterlay Riesling Erste Lage (12 g/l RS) that is delicious, and a great value compared to both 1896 bottlings. Also hitting on the delicious plus value double is the 2016 Loewen Riesling Alte Reben.

Can I admit that while I am thrilled Loewen is making wine from the Schmitt-Wagner vineyards, I am ticked that he has turned them into trophy priced bottlings. They used to be insane values.
