Now the puzzle: another wooden board or a fancy modern material? What are you using and do you like it?

We have some plastic boards - color-coded in theory to distinguish meat, veggie and dairy boards, but we just got the colors for pretty. But I still love my wooden board best. I like its feel, and no matter what kind of assurances the manufacturers give, I still feel it's better for my knives.

The sad thing, Pumpkin's injuries aside, is that's the end of an obviously well-loved piece of kitchen hardware. It will take some work to find another you can love as much, let alone achieve that valuable used sheen with.

Right. Pumpkin actually had that board before he had me! We used it for food prep every day.

I have a slight preference for wooden boards over plastic ones, but both are good. We have one that's a very hard composite of some kind that I don't like much - I suspect it's hard enough that it dulls knives. We have one bamboo one that seems to work well but we haven't had it for long, so I don't know how rugged they are.

Tests favour wood over plastic in terms of hygiene. I agree - glue it or replace it.

I favour bamboo for cutting boards.
