WTN: Lobster wines, plus roses, Corsica, etc

by Dale Williams » Mon Jun 19, 2017 1:38 pm

Thursday was National Lobster Day, and friends invited us over (Stew Leonard’s had them on sale). Pup came as well. Started with smoked eel (Betsy had brought back from London) on green apple with a yogurt/chive sauce, a red pepper spread from our Armenian store, and dolmades.

2013 Breton “La Ritournelle”

Crunchy red fruited PetNat, sour cherry Fun B

With Baked stuffed lobsters, corn, and salad

2011 Fevre “Montee de Tonnere” Chablis 1er
Full, chalky, pear and oystershell, good length. This seems like it could age, though Fevre is a notorious premoxer, but now using Diam, so maybe will give a shot. B+/A-.

2012 Huet “Clos du Bourg” Vouvray Sec
Nice waxy/wooly Chenin, honey and citrus over apple, but there is just a hint of oxidation that is worrisome. B+?

2015 Jadot Beaujolais-Villages
Raspberry, cherry, light and straightforward. B

Friday with Ottolenghi turkey/zucchini burgers with sumac sauce & a beet/leek/walnut salad

2016 Cazin Cheverny rose
Very nice, high acids, sour black cherry and melon, good finish. B++

2016 Chidaine Touraine Rose
Lighter, juicy cherries, fresh. B

Lobsters were still on sale, so Saturday we did straight boiled with corn and salad.

1985 ZD Chardonnay
Exactly what one would expect, undrinkably oxidized. Could still taste some butter under the cider. D

2011 Bize “Aux Vergelesses” Savigny-les-Beaune 1er
Peach and apple, lemon zest, touch of hazelnut. Lovely young Meursault ringer. A-/B+

Sunday went to friends for dinner, started with dips and a couple of roses

2015 Commanderie De La Bargemone rose
Getting a little tired, shows sweet, needs zip. B-/C+

2016 Houchart rose (Cotes de Provence)
Light, fresh, easy red berry fruit. B/B-

Dinner was local lamb, green beans, roast potatoes, and salad

2012 Domaine Comte Abbatucci Cuvée Collection "Ministre Imperial"
Midbodied, snappy red fruit, sandalwood, herbs. Really tasty. B+/A-

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

How did the Beaujolais pair with the lobster? I wouldn't have thought of that. For that matter, how was the Chablis? I would normally have gone with a more full bodied, buttery Chard.

Lobster and one of the big but balanced CA chards is the way to go IMHO. MT Eden, Mayacamas, Ramey, Varner, etc are matches made in heaven for lobster soaked in melted butter. :D

How do you feel about smoked mackerel?

I find fuller Chablis (1er and GC from non-lean producers) is a fine match with lobster. On Th night the Huet with it's light touch of sweetness did a bit better, because the stuffed lobsters had a bit of spice. The Beaujolais came out after dinner as we were just sitting on deck enjoying the evening (host is one of those "first duty of a wine is to be red" guys, don't think I've ever been there that at least one red wasn't served).
On Saturday the Bize did great with steamed lobster (just did a little lemon, no butter).
Lou, I've certainly enjoyed Mt Eden and Mayacamas with lobster, and have a Ramey Hyde to try. But where did you find a balanced Varner? :)
Bob, I don't think there is any category of smoked seafood I don't like (if done well)

Ramey Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay is the go-to wine with my mom's lobster crumble.

I haven't had a Varner in a couple of years or so, right now I'm drinking Ramey & Mayacamas. That older impression was Ramey like. Quien sabe? Things change

Lou,
actually my experiences of Varner are much older (early aughts) where I thought quite oaky (though Ramey is certainly oaky as well, but I thought the mineral/acid notes bring it in balance). Unfair for me to comment really

I own no Condrieu so unlikely for me to consider. Generally find it overpriced and too floral/soft for me.
Is it considered a frequent match?

News to me. I've heard Chenin. Never Condrieu.
