How to Become a Champagne Master

by Jenise » Mon Jan 22, 2018 3:59 pm

One of the worst articles you'll ever read about champagne:

http://www.foodandwine.com/champagne-ty ... kling-wine

But it's written by a wine prophet! (See other post.)

Crappy writing indeed.

But it does have the virtue of loading very slowly. ;)

Crappy writing and erroneous facts. Food and Wine should be greatly embarrassed.

Ouch. That's just bad.
I've never had Ace of Spades, I'll have to put my desire to be a Champagne Master on hold.

And the facts are just nuts. Like the part where he says the Belle Epoque was Queen Victoria's favorite--apparently they first made that bottling in 1964.

Interesting, Jenise. Here's a paragraph from the Perrier-Jouët website:

"This quest for perfection guarantees Perrier-Jouët its rightful place at the most prestigious tables. Not to mention the royal courts of Napoleon III or Queen Victoria. Since Princess Grace of Monaco declared the bottle with the iconic anemone to be her favourite champagne, Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque has accompanied the Rose Ball for many years."

Looks like he saw this paragraph too, and took some facts from it (the quote about Gallé is from a different page on the same website) -- but couldn't actually be bothered to read it carefully enough to get the facts right.

FLUNK.

Exactly. And the entire article is riddled with 'facts' like these.

I have tasted Ace of Spades several times at walk around events. You are not missing anything.

At a "walk around" you might not be missing anything, but at a Gentlemen's Club
just having an Ace of Spades sitting on the table you might find "pleasure"

To be snarky, the article reads like some "wine prophet" hoping to get (or already getting on basis of a F&W spot) free samples of blingy wines. Few signs he ever tasted actual wines, and nothing beyond current release. If you really wanted to be a Champagne master, wouldn't you want to taste something with a little age? But less likely to get samples.

This guy is totally bogus. He didn't say a word about which party had the best cocaine and sparkle pairing. Feh.
