WTN: Chevillon

Domaine Robert Chevillon 2002 Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Cru "Roncières". We last had a bottle of this a year or so ago, I think, and it while it was really good then, this bottle had an extra bit of magic. The fresh fruit of youth is now almost, but not completely, masked by an intensely feral nose and entry, but in the mouth, that gamey element recedes, like a wave, revealing pure, silken fruit and almost chalky minerality (I mean in taste, not texture). For me, this is at the perfect point, but then again, last time we opened a bottle I thought the same thing...

Good to hear. I last opened a bottle of this in 2014, and it was very closed in.

Thanks for excellent note
I was pondering a '02 Chaignots the other day. Like David was worried it might be a bit closed.

Can't give you comparative data as I don't have (have never had) any 02 Chaignots, unfortunately. Something made me think Roncières might be more ready to go than Vaucrains, my other 02, but I can't recall if that was notes from here, or just aggregate CT impressions...

Or the fact that Vaucrains is almost never ready.

I generally group the Chevillon 1ers for aging in groups
Chaignots, Roncieres, and Bousselots as most forward, though all reward cellaring. Sure there are differences within vintages, but as a rule they show fairly similarly.
Pruliers & Perrieres a bit sterner.
Then the big 3, with as David said the Vaucrains being even slower to come around than Cailles &LSG.

But that's not scientific, just my impressions

That's helpful, and interesting -- I had that sense about Cailles and Les St Georges but don't have enough experience across the whole range to sort out the other two groups, and definitely didn't know Vaucrains was supposedly sternest. (I don't think I've opened any.) Don't think I've ever had any Bousselots at all, and my only Chaignots are 2010, still haven't tried. Given the prices these days, my Chevillon stock probably won't be growing, but since I have most of a mixed case still left from 01-02, this is useful (wish I had bought 3x as much back then...).

Given what has been happening with California pinot Noir prices, Chevillon is looking more affordable by the day.

Middle of the road CA Pinots now run $65. It's rare that a really good quality wine is under $50. Plenty of them are now $75-$85. I really like Littorai, but I cannot say that LIttorai Pivot Vineyard (or Mays Canyon, or Cerise) is better than Chevillon Roncieres. I can get the mid-tier Chevillon wines for $85-ish and no tax or shipping. The Chevillon N-S-G VV is the same price as the Littorai Sonoma Coast, before shipping!

Looks like I just convinced myself to drop Littorai.

Here, after tax but without shipping, Chevillon 1ers are usually 100-130, and I just don't buy very regularly in that price range -- from California, Burgundy, or anywhere else.

That's Vaucrains, Cailles and LSG for me. Sadly I am out.
