WTN: Idlewild Valdiguie '13....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Mar 13, 2018 8:57 am

Pulled this out to try last night:
1. Idlewild Valdiguie EnzenauerVnyd/DryCreekVlly/SonomaCnty (12.5%; www.IdlewildWines.com) 2013: Light ruby/garnet color; attractive Gamay/floral/violets some earthy/dusty rather Bojo-like some spicy quite pretty nose; rather tart/crisp/bit lean very pretty Gamay/floral/violets/spicy light earthy/dusty slight Bojo-like flavor w/ light brisk/tangy tannins; fairly long bright/zippy/crisp Gamay-like/floral/violets some earthy/dusty finish w/ light crisp tannins; fairly Bojo-like if a bit rustic; a quite pretty Gamay but not of Beauj GC quality; probably should be drunk up; exactly the kind of wine that hip Somms go Ape$hit over.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Valdiguie is a grape variety of Languedoc/Rousillon. Never done did see one in the wild. Used to be known as Napa Gamay in Calif.

Given that it is not Gamay, is it even fair to judge it against Beaujolais Grand Cru wines, Tom?

A grape I have never been able to really warm up to. Didn’t much care for Sam’s rendition, nor did I care for Michael Cruse’s attempts with the grape.

Jeez, Brian.....I've not been told to play fair since ole lady Moffat scolded me to back in first grade at recess
at NoblePrentis!!

Stylistically, it reminds me a lot of Bojo, so I thought it was a fair comparison and since I've never
had a Languedoc/Rousillon Valdigue...I had nothing else to compare it to.

If it wasn't for a visiting French winemaker in the 1980's or DNA reasearch in the early 1990's we would probably still be calling it Napa Gamay or Gamay Beaujolais.

Just giving you a hard time, Tom. Especially since you don't like those hard tannins.
