WTN: another Baumard

by Patchen Markell » Tue May 22, 2018 7:57 am

Domaine des Baumard 2002 Savennières Clos du Papillon. Expected the worst, but this didn't seem premoxed, just dull. There's some lemon oil, wax, and a little spice in there, but overall, this seems broad, slightly watery, and unfocused -- perfectly drinkable, but much less interesting than the regular 1996. Unfortunately, this is the one of which I have one more...

I bought a half dozen of that wine, and never had a bottle that was worth drinking.

I think this must have been number 2 of 3. I suspect I tried the first one young and decided to ignore it in the hope it would “develop.” Meh.

Hey, we've all been there.

On the plus side, you're clearing out wine!

Oh, man, I have a bottle of this and the Quarts de Chaume of the same year that I bought more than 10 years ago on the theory that Baumard Savennieres were immortal. Since I mainly age riesling I haven't been paying as much attention to premox but obviously there's more going on than I realize. Probably time to bring these in from the off-site and pop them. The only other experience I have is with 1998-99-00 Domaine aux Moines that have held up very nicely, if not exactly improved.

I've just looked at the inventory, and apparently I have *3* 2002 Quarts de Chaume. Oy.

On the other hand, on the scale of things that can go wrong by making decisions in your youth based on a misplaced faith in immortality, "being left with a few questionable bottles of Baumard" ain't too bad. :D

We’re only immortal for a limited time.
