WTN: The Enz justifies the means

by David M. Bueker » Tue Jun 05, 2018 7:39 pm

2016 Dirty and Rowdy Mourvedre Old Vine Enz Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Lime Kiln Valley (6/5/2018)
Tasted over two nights, this was quite exuberant, if somewhat unformed on night one. There was plenty of dark cherry fruit, as well as salty/savory elements. In terms of depth and richness it struck the middle ground for D&R wines. It did not show the snappiness of Evanglho or outright weight of Shake Ridge, but did not seem at all lean. On night two that changed, as the wine went into a shell. The fruit receeded into a dense mass with some savory coating on the outside like the monolith from 2001, dipped in olive tapenade. So either drink it all on night one, or wait several years for the wine to come further into its own.

Curious, David...do you know if these grapes are Old/Old Vine or New/OldVine at Enz??
They advertise themselves as having the oldest planting of Viognier in Calif. In point of fact, in the late
1990's, they grafted over a bunch of OldVine Zin rows to Viognier and now tout it as OldVine Viognier.

No idea. There is nothing available on Hardy’s site to explain, and I don’t have the original offer to check his notes.

Well, David...looking at the vines:

it appears these are authentic Old/Old vines.
Didn't realize that there was Mataro/Mourvedre in Enz.

Thanks for the info Tom. I was busy with work today, and had no chance to do a search.
