WTN: Albarino, NSG, St Joseph

Betsy headed off from Portland the Sebago Lake festival, I took bus and Amtrak home. After retrieving pup, too tired to really cook. Defrosted some confit legs, made quinoa (duck broth), frozen peas.

2013 Chevillon Nuits St George VV
Bright, black cherry, vanilla and campfire, nice in young sort of way. B+/B

Saturday steak, green beans with tomatoes, baby bok choy
2016 Barou “Autre Monde” St Joseph
Good acids, light tannins, crushed blackberry fruit, peppery nose. Fine bargain at $19 sale price, B+

Sunday was swordfish, shishitos, squash, beet greens caprese

2015 Do Ferreiro “Cepas Vellas” Albarino (Rias Baixas)
This super old vines bottling is usually considered maybe top Albarino made, I always look forward to trying. But this bottle seemed flat and short, while there were only hints, I think this had seen some heat. From a reputable retailer, but with a sourced from private collector sticker. Drinkable, but barely, after dinner I switched to tastes of the NSG and St Jo.

No wines Monday (Korean stew with fish balls) but Tuesday I grilled some squash and eggplant, then added (along with leftover green beans with tomato) to some mussels for a variation of a mussel and ratatouille recipe I liked. Went with Albarino again, this time with more success. The 2015 Forja de Salnes “Leirana Finca Genoveva” ( Rías Baixas) is delicious. Full and zippy, saline and orange peel on top of bright white fruits. Long finish. B+/A-

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

This is a wine I usually like and occasionally purchase. I'm never clear what that "private collector sticker" means, but I suspect it's not what we Think it means. (I doubt it is an actual collector these are bought from, as you see these stickers on newly released wines, and think it merely is a legal formality to be able to get retailers the wines, perhaps a legal disclaimer for direct import?

In NY it's a legal requirement for anything bought from a private (unlicensed) individual by a licensed retailer (inc auction). Some are wines bought from collectors (CSW frequently buys customers' cellars, as do other specialty stores) , others are probably bulk. I think the actual requirement is that "collector" must have owned for more than a year. Could be related to DI, but there are enough importers who expedite DI that not sure what would be gained. I think this bottle went in recycling, but believe there was a US importer listed, but it wasn't T. Edward or de Maison, so this was grey marketed I assume. I'm just guessing at some point it wasn't treated well.

A shame for a 2015. It's not like it's had decades to bounce around from location to location. And normally you would expect CSW to have reliable sources.

But, of course things can happen. If you're certain of heat damage, you might let them know? At a minimum so they have info on that source.

Sorry, I mentioned CSW as I've often bought wines from collections there, but this was from another retailer (Zachys).
I don''t usually return bottles. I probably should, but just regard as part of the deal. CSW in particular guarantees off bottles, but I've never pursued.
David, I wouldn't with a Chevillon 1er, but I seldom find the village NSG to be really shut down, and a splash decant usuallly suffices if need be.

Yes, I also am not the most vigilant about returning corked bottles. Usually only when the retailer is nearby and convenient.

But for heat damaged wine (especially on such a young wine which has probably had a limited number of owners), was thinking that they might like to know their source was compromised.
