WTN: 1979 Ch. du Tertre (Margaux)

by Dale Williams » Sat Sep 22, 2018 10:38 pm

Friday I got a ranch steak from local butcher, did a baharat rub, served with a spaghetti squash gratin, caprese, and greens. Wine was the 1979 du Tertre, an old friend. Lovely perfumed nose, high toned and elegant. On the palate cassis and black plum. Plenty of acid, a little tannin still giving structure, cigarbox notes get more intense with air. A-/B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

One of the great sleepers, from a vintage full of them. Worth looking for as well as another wine punching way over its weight, Giscours 1979.

Yes, I think I took a bottle of Giscours to a '79 dinner couple years ago, that I bought on your rec.
Amazing how good 70s decade of Giscours are compared to 80s and 90s (especially 80s)

I've always had good luck with du Tertre. I've drunk through my 70s vintages but still have some 82 in the cellar - time to revisit it, thanks for the reminder.

I've drunk up my 79s as they turned downhill some years ago, although still occasionally able to show well as your did. Have only a Ducru and a Latour left - both probably due for drinking.
