WTN: Election-watching wine

by Jenise » Wed Nov 07, 2018 5:12 pm

We were expressly planning NOT to have wine last night, but the way things were going we decided we needed a little emotional padding so I went to the cellar. Inspired by the fact that things were going south (of where we wanted them to in places like Florida) and that we could but sit idly by and watch, I chose this wine from the Southern Hemisphere:

2014 Innocent Bystander Pinot Noir
A negotiant wine from cool south island grapes, Central Otago in fact IIRC, this pinot noir has vivid color, body, balance and varietal typicity far greater than its $18 price tag with none of the faults one might legitimately expect from a negotiant at this price. I originally bought it to include in a 14-wine smorgasbord of New Zealand wines where it was a justifiable hit and bought a few extras to pour for the occasional guest who likes wine but is relatively unconcerned about what they drink. Cool thing is, we're just as happy to drink it ourselves!

What did you drink?

Agreed, but remember I'm on the West Coast. At 7 p.m. my time when this decision was made, things weren't trending as well as they did later in spite of the loss of Beto and Florida.

A bunch of my political science types love discussing what to drink while watching returns. Rustic American bourbon was a clear choice. I posited that a snarkier option would be to enjoy the fruits of sh@thole countries, perhaps with an exquisite Haitian rhum.

Of course in practice, I drank nothing, and was doing work while trying to avoid the mindnumbing newsfeed.
