Tooting my own horn: I got word that I'm in the running for an award in the James Beard Food Writing Contest for my "Stalking the Elusive Wasabi."

With my luck, I probably won't win anything, so this is my only chance to crow. But wish me luck.

Larry,

Does that article appear anywhere online?

I assume that most of the green stuff we in the US see that claims to be wasabi is actually colored horseradish.

Color me disappointed; from the thread title, I thought this was going to be about fart-inducing foods.

Hey, best of luck!

Congratulations Larry! I remember reading somewhere sometime ago that more wasabi is grown in Oregon than is grown in Japan. IIRC the article reported that the Japanese actually import from Oregon much of what they use there. Nice article.

Oh, how cool. Congratulations! Please let us know when you hear something.

And, off-topic but related: a few months ago I saw fresh wasabi in a supermarket in Seattle. And it wasn't even an Asian supermarket. $70 a pound, but it was there. Things are changing.

Thanks, Robin. I probably saw that or something else that informed me of the existence of the fresh wasabi paste which I bought a few years ago. With the short refrigerator/freezer life I didn't use enough of the paste to make it worthwhile to reorder.

Congratulations, Larry. I enjoyed the article itself, and would love to see you win it.

Regards, Bob
