WTN: Short Notes on Assorted Sauternes from Vinexpo

by Jay Labrador » Mon May 29, 2006 9:05 am

I was able to jostle my way through the crowd at the Sauternes booth and so was able to make some notes on the order of good, very good, or so so on some of the Sauternes on offer. As with all the sweet wines I tasted, no spitting for me here!

La Tour Blanche 2002 - Very smooth and balanced. Very good.

Nairac 1996 - Good balance. Light. Oxidation. Drink up if you have it. So so.

Myrat 2003 - Brown sugar nose. Not cloying. A bit light. Good balance of sweetness, alcohol and acidity. Good.

Romer 2002 - Not that sweet. Bitter. Not good.

de Malle 1999 - Slightly burnt fruit. Good.

d'Arche 1998 - High alcohol. A bit hot. Good balance. Good.

Filhot 2003 - Very rich. Excellent.

Caillou 2002 - Rather light. So so.

Rayne Vigneau 2001 - Very rich. Harmonious. Very good.

Haut Peyraguey 2002 - Very good

Rieussec 2002 - Excellent

Agreed. Not the slightest hint that this was from a middling Sauternes year.
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.
