WTN: Porcupine Ridge Syrah 2004

by Bruce Hayes » Sun Jun 04, 2006 10:22 am

From the Coastal Region. Boekenhoutskloof Winery.

Decanted.

Smoky, with some burned-charred notes on the nose.

Rich cherry fruit, tangy, smoky, spicy, bitter burned flavours and the alcohol comes through quite strongly.

With the alcohol and the bitter burned notes, this was not a pleasant bottle of wine.

Yikes, sounds awful. I believe I remember knowing that Porcupine Ridge is one of the well-known winery's second label--do you know which?

It is made by Boekenhoutskloof Winery.

I have had the Porcupine Ridge Syrah from two vintages now and I find there is quite a high level of bottle variation. One is great, one is horrid.

Ah, Boekenhoutskloof. I knew it was a winery I was familiar with, thanks. Re the variatin you describe, that's intolerable, even in a so-called 'budget' wine.
