Who is going to Mo'Cool

by Bob Henrick » Tue Jun 24, 2008 3:45 pm

Mo'Cool 2008 is about 7 weeks away and it won't be long before we have a sign-up sheet, to let the planners know who and how many. I am throwing this out in the hopes of 1) getting the sign-up list jump started, and 2) as a means of talking up the annual wine weekend in Ann Arbor Michigan. So, if you KNOW that you will attend, sign on, and let us know, and if you are only mostly sure, still let us know. If you have questions, post those too, or if you have questions and the forum administration would prefer, then PM or email me the questions and I will try my best to help. BTW, I KNOW I will be there.

Looks positive for me. I've already booked plane flight into Detroit and motel room. Now wondering how to transport 4-6 wines in the airplane cargo section without risk of them overheating.

Jane, you can bury a few bottles of wine in your clothing suitcase (if you have room) and they should be fine. There has been a lot of reports of this being successful over the years. You might even be able to carry 4-6 wines as hand carried luggage and store them in the overhead. I am very happy to hear that you will be in attendance.

Can't carry liquids into the cabin in this new age of security.

Steve,
I'm obviously not Bob, but I believe the event is the weekend of 8/16/2008. There is a thread someplace on the off line section of this board that may have more details..

Steve, it is the Weekend of 8/16. If there is any chance you can attend that weekend, please let me know! The main event is on Saturday 8/16 and the theme is Bordeaux vintages divisible by 5. No, worry though about on theme wines, bring something you want us to taste. Julia B would be thrilled if you came, but then you have history! :D

I'm thrilled to imagine that Julia B. might be thrilled. Will have to give it some thought (getting perilously close to harvest)!

I'm booked to come - although Catherine can't make it this time (the changed weekend conflicts with visitor from out-of-town). But a couple of friends from a few years back (Leon & Evelyn) are also intending to come. I'm still waiting on hearing back from a couple of one-time regulars.
Of course, Bordeaux is not my strong point - is 1961 divisible by 5 (under any alternative counting scheme)? I think I still have a half-bottle from that year.

Not easily, Alan: the quadratic n^2+9n+6 doesn't factor to integral roots. There probably exists a complex base in which 1961 would be evenly divisible by 5, but let's focus on the pragmatic: no one will object to you bringing a '61, regardless of theme

What about base 1956?
If that doesn't work, I've discovered a 1960 and a 1925 (white)!
OK I went through a phase of buying stuff from weird years (actually came in mixed cases bought at auction).

Miss Allie and I are trying to make it, depending how fast we can get out of NYC. So, until further notice, count us in as 2. Sounds like great fun and finally a chance to meet some wino's !

Nope. 1961 in base 1956 is 7517975977 decimal, which isn't evenly divisible by 5.

I think that you'd be better received were you carrying the '61, but you never know, I suppose...

Actually, you can, you just can't carry them through Security. Next time you're in Seattle check out Vino Volo, an excellent wine bar and store in the food court area. You can buy wines there and take them on planes, I've done it over and over, and the stews have never questioned it. Which doesn't help you because I know you want to bring the wines from your own cellar, but I wanted to clarify the problem.

When we travel with wine we use a styrofoam shipper as another piece of luggage. The styrofoam adds some insulating protection, and we've even put six bottles in the middle two rows of a 12 bottle case and filled the empty slots at each end with additional insulation. I'm suddenly wondering how it would work to put some of those frozen gizmos at each end for some real chill.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

The frozen gizmos were what I was thinking Jenise--the blue ice. They work for several hours in a nylon carrier in my car so might keep the wine reasonably cool while on the tarmac--especially since I don't change planes (direct from Raleigh to Detroit.) Having to change planes at LaGuardia on the way to Rochester, NY and the Finger Lakes was what messed me up last time. The air traffic control computers crashed that day and we were lucky to get to Rochester at all after a four-hour delay.
