We're making a lamb dish, and going to the shop I asked for a easy drinking Rhone, and so came home with a nice (at least I hope) Cotes-du-Ventoux.

Whatever she wants.

Babysitter, dinner out, prix fixe meal with paired wines. Will write it up if it's anything noteworthy.

We are still debating between a 1990 Comtesse Marie and a 1996 Salon. Either one should be outstanding but I kind of want to save the Salon for a more special occasion.

We are going to a BYOB event that is serving Baked Stuffed Haddock and Marinated Sirloin Strips. True Love has indicated that she will try some of each. She does not care for most Rosés. So, I’m torn between Riesling and Pinot. Decisions, decisions! Well, maybe both.

Valentine's day has only gained momentum in the last few years, when retailers decided they could make a buck out of it. Now, I see fourteen year olds walking round with smug expressions and large bunches of roses that must have cost (some other fourteen year old) a hundred dollars, and lots of adverts in the paper for frilly underwear and 'special deals' at flash hotels.
Must be middle age, but I'm not playing.

Valentine's Day here is a non event. On our first V Day together we were in Disney Land LA, and during the evening we found a card shop. We found a card each, met in the middle, then looked at the price of each card. Around $US5 EACH, in 1981! No way! They went back on the stand immediately, never to darken our door again.

Exactly. Our V Day is the week before, 7th Feb, our wedding aniversary. Last week I woke up to a beautiful red rose on the 'Dublin Bay' climbing rose bush right outside the bedroom window. We drank Jacquart Champagne and it was so hot here last weekend, that out 'flash' hotel for the night was a tent on the lawn.

Just another day to me so I'll open whatever the hell I feel like opening!

I'm looking forward to opening a 2004 Paolo Manzone Serralunga Barolo, serving with duck breast, rice pilaf, a mushroom sauce, and steamed carrots. cheers, Bonnie

We don't observe Valentines Day at my house (per my request, I hate commercially-motivated holidays), but coincidentally we've booked an evening at the local culinary college where the meals are quite extravagant and each course will be paired with something sparkling.

Lobster tonight so I am thinking a Muscadet or a Chablis.

Since we had our meal out last night, today will be an afternoon of tromping through the woods we just bought, with a bottle of Gruet Brut NV to toast the site of our future home. Oh, and cards to exchange tonight. I suppose we'll rummage around for something light for supper, maybe with another bottle of Gruet, although it could not possibly top the Branson Coach House "Rare" Shiraz (2003) we had last night. That was superb, and got better as the evening wore on.

We realized several years ago that dining out on Valentine's Day means extra-crowded restaurants, with spotty service and a 'hurry up and eat so we can free the table for the next couple' attitude pervasive around here. Therefore we now go out either the night before or the night after, depending on the day of the week VD is that year.

FWIW, I like sending cards but never buy the ones that are specially tailored to specific occasions.

The wife and I routinely ignore Valentine's Day, but by logistical coincidence I ended up presenting her with both chocolate (bought in Paris on my recently completed trip) and flowers (bought at work as part of a fund-raising activity for charity) when she returned from her business trip last night. Not a bad way to greet the wife after not seeing her for 2 weeks.

I figure I am covered.

Give your better half our regards for a speedy recovery. If Cornelia hadn't been forced to hit you so often because of your bad deportment in public her shoulder would never have given out.

I am thinking of cracking open an '05 Burgundy, Simom Bize, Savigny, "aux Vergelesses," in half-bottle. I am curious how they are faring. (Have others drunk any '05 recently?) If partner was not down with the flu, something older and larger would have been in order, though I hear and sympathize with everyone on the overhyped Valentine's holiday (basically made up by greeting card companies). Still, any excuse for opening something special serves.
