WTN: Obscure Asia pun nobody will get

by David M. Bueker » Sun Mar 22, 2009 6:48 pm

2004 Ridge Carignane Buchignani Ranch (Sonoma County)
This is juicy and fun with some earthiness (dare I say a little horsey) that keeps it grounded. Very tasty with my grilled burger. It's not serious, rather it is a lot of fun to drink. Reminds me of a more fruit-forward Cotes du Rhone.

Carignan - Kari-Anne.

I was going to do Crosby, Stills & Nash but figured that was too easy.

Boy you guys are no fun tonight. :wink:

It's just that most of us have spent 20+ years trying to forget Asia. :)

Save your CSN puns for a Meursault 1er :)

I had almost succeeded, too, until this thread. But I never begrudged John Wetton the right to make some money after making some great music (in his previous bands).

I'm glad it's just a band I never heard of.

I was busy trying to make Buchignane into ぶっかけ

Ahh, what a relief it is to be able to step down as worst punster on the site. I gracefully yield the crown to you, David. You summed it up nicely in the header. :mrgreen:

As for Asia, I was trying to think of any of their pieces that I'd classify as worthwhile, and am coming up dry, although I seem to recall at least one decent album. I may have to haul out some of their vinyl next time I am spinning some, and refresh my memory. I have a feeling I may not thank you for that! Some fo their singles didn't suck too hard - Heat of the Moment, maybe. I'd agree that they can't hold a candle, to, say, Toto.... :wink:

I always liked Asia, mostly because I am a John Wetton and Steve Howe fan. They re-grouped for a 25th anniversary tour & there's a DVD out there. Boy do they look like a bunch of silly geezers now.

Hard to think of a group of grandfathers that don't look a tad odd as they rock out.....and the voices go before the instrumental skill does.

One of the guys that retains his voice (I guess he isn't that old) is Stevie Winwood.

One of my absolute favorites. He's 60 or so.

In Japanese
Buchi = spots
Nani = what

So the karianne comment makes alot more sense.

I would suggest that "Buchignani" should be pronounced in the Italian manner (Boo-key-nya-nee) which would rather give us

buki = weapon
nya = what a cat says
ni = two.

Indeed, the karianne comment DOES make more sense. For what it's worth.

Japanese pronunciation is remarkably close to Spanish (and thus not so distant from Italian). I lived in Japan for a bit and studied Spanish as well, resulting in an ability to inadvertently create Esperanto neologisms from time to time.

Hence "Boo-chee-nah-nee"
