Kitt Peak is a magic sort of place - the vista from the mountain top is captivating, the skies at night gorgeous, and for astronomers a fun place to be. For me, a nice combo of work and vacation. So, you're a physicist - that makes us kindred spirits. What sort of work do you do? I study oxygen abundances in galactic (aka open) star clusters.

Hello Ryan and welcome to us!
That's a nice telescope you are standing in front of. Where is it?
Cheers, Anders

Thank you Anders! That is the WIYN 3.5 meter at Kitt Peak National Observatory, which is 50 miles SW of Tucson, Arizona. My department is part of the consortium that owns/operates it (we're Indiana - the "I" in WIYN). All the info you could possibly want: http://www.noao.edu/wiyn/

Welcome, Ryan. Spent a few years in Bloomington myself. Most of it in Ballantine Hall and Nick's.

Yepp, I am an accelerator physicist, mainly working with the small synchrotron we have at the Manne Siegbahn Laboratory in Stockholm, so except for keeping the machine running and delivering lots of different ions to the experimentalists, I do some research on the machine itself, involving such things as electron cooling, non sinusoidal rf and sensitive beam diagnostics. Here's a link to our web site, in case someone would like to read a bit more...
David, did that sound a little like Bocci?

Welcome, my dear Rogov!

Hi everyone ! I had registered on both Stratsplace and here as well. It would be nice to see two groups of nice winelovers join together and achieve the 1+1=3 result!

I dropped out of egullet after posting for a long time, due to their draconic editiorial policies. This is a much more friendly forum.

Michelle, I just spent 20 minutes or so purusing your blog--it's great! You are obviously a clever and talented cook, and I no longer want the lunch I've made for myself to eat shortly since it will taste nothing like your potato starch crepes with the Syrian ground meat filling with which I completely bonded. Among other things. We look forward to your participation here, and I'd like to invite you to visit our "Kitchen" and share your blog there, too. I know others will find it as interesting as I do.

Given that we have fresh apricots and almonds in abundance here right now, I will be trying Michelle's Roasted Apricot and Almond Ice Cream just as soon as I get done with the peach-buttermilk sherbet I made last night.

So another "welcome", Michelle! (And the rest of you from Strat's Place as well.)

Firstly welcome to the new folk (and some well already known from other places). A sad way to have to move, but a warm welcome is assured.

Robin, Rogov
I'm a little confused (what's new!). Are the Rogov forums an archive, or an ongoing forum and if the latter, are they focused on a particular area or just an alternative to the existing forums? To be honest, as I tend to read via 'view recent posts' I can't say I take much notice of which forum the post is in  , but for new posts I guess it's more important.

regards
