WTN: 2005 Strub Niersteiner Grüner Veltliner Kabinet Feinherb

2005 Strub Niersteiner Grüner Veltliner Kabinet Feinherb - Germany, Rheinhessen (8/13/2007)
Richer and thicker than my prior two experiences. Perhaps this is filling out a touch in the bottle. Tastes more like Austrian Gruner Veltliner than some German Riesling substitute, with peach, cress and pepper flavors predominating. Still a great value at $12.

I have read that small amounts of the grape are grown in Germany, but haven't seen any and don't even remember seeing a note on any! What other properties make good ones in Germany? Is it seen outside of Rheinhessen in Germany?

I am unaware of any other German producers of Gruner Veltliner. This is the first commercial vintage from Strub. There is a 2006.

I did a double take just now reading your title: STRUB Gruner? Yes, your note confirms, you really did say that. Thanks for the report, I'll have to look for the wine.

Koegler in the 'gau also makes one and I'm sure that more are on the way. I'll certainly try the Strub -thanks for the heads up. I'd love to see Alsace experiment with GV, although a commercially available bottle isn't likely...
