WTN: '00 Rochioli Estate Pinot Noir

by wrcstl » Sat Aug 25, 2007 6:10 pm

Opened the wine to serve with grilled salmon. At first taste it was huge, very tight and revealing nothing. After 15 minutes in the glass the wine opened up. The wine was a very big, dark cherry fruit with a sweetness that revolved around the dark fruit, not just RS. Was very impressed. This wine has more weight than any west coast PN I have every tasted and will go on for many years. Excellent structure, resolved tannins, complex and just a great drink.

Two years ago I dropped Rochioli because I was on too many lists and most of what I was drinking was old world. May have been a mistake. They own the land and long term, with good wine making technique have the ability to make the best RR PN. Only nit has been some year to year variation.

Walt,
Thanks for the note. I think I have 2 of these in the cellar and it sounds like it might be time to check in on one of them.

Finished the whole bottle over dinner. My wife usually has one glass with dinner but opted for 2. Not very good with TNs and didn't mention the asian spice with the fruit which is common in RR.

May have been a mistake.

Yup. They certainly make some of the finest CA pinots I've had.

Jenise,
I would probably still make the same decision today because I had too many west coast wines and my wife and my palate was much more old world. I chose to stay with Dehlinger because of the consistency and they make a great cab but get little press for that. Really liked the '00 Rochioli but you can't collect everything. Just finished an '89 Meyney with lamb chops and for the money I have to go with the Meyney

Walt,
We opened a 2000 Rochioli Estate Pinot last evening with grilled salmon as well. It was drinking beautifully. Folks, if you're holding some, this might be a good time to open one.
All FWIW,
'Winger
