Most purchased in 1 day???

by P. Rousseau » Sun Aug 26, 2007 10:22 am

Yesterday, we brought some friends to the Deutsche Weinstrasse with the intention of introducing them to German wines. A few bottles here, a few bottles there, a LOT of bottles over there... next thing we knew, we had 121 bottles in the back of the BMW!!! I'm still not sure how we did that. LOL

So, in an ordinary, "cruising" day, what's the most you've ever purchased?

Similar. About that, over two-three days at Dennis Overstreet's wine store in Newport Beach, where most of the wine was champagne and 98-99 Bordeaux. I'd fill up my little convertible, drive the wine home, then return the next day and fill up again. Prices were 1/3-1/2 retail.

Once a case of Woop Woop (going out of business sale).
Another time a mixed case at a Tent Sale.

Cheating a little, my most purchased in one trip (two days up in Sonoma County): 13 cases. It was around 1986, and my friend Mary's parents had moved to Santa Rosa. giving us a free place to stay, so she and I drove up from Mountain View in my 1981 VW Rabbit Convertible with one overnight bag each.

We tasted at a small assortment of wineries, and there were a couple that had some unbelievably good deals (one was changing its label style and was dumping the bottles with the older ones, one had actually changed the winery name and was selling off the former winery's stock for $2.00/bottle!).

Somehow, we managed to fit 13 cases of wine, two tall women, and two small overnight bags in my car. It did require putting the roof down to load and back up again to ensure the cases were secured!

Nearly all of the wine was mine... at that time, Mary only liked late harvest Riesling and late harvest Gewurztraminer, the sweeter the better (awk!). I'm pleased to report that I started to convert her on that tasting trip--now she's a well-rounded wine lover!

I hadn't thought about that trip for years, thanks for jogging that memory.

Most in one day--I think it was five and a half cases at one of the Chalone Shareholders' Celebrations about eight years ago (after I got my wine storage unit and before I'd filled it up!).
