WTN: Meyney 1996

by Matt Richman » Mon Aug 27, 2007 9:36 pm

To answer my own question about how this is drinking, I opened my only bottle that is not in offsite storage.

Ch Meyney 1996
Fairly simple and primary with nice sweet fruit, good toasted oak structure, and some iron and herbal background. A nice, mature, good drinking Bordeaux. Not particularly hefty, deep, or complex. At it's drinking window--not going to get better, but will hold tight for a while longer. A solid but forgettable weeknight wine.

You know, I see it at a couple of places for about $26 and I think it compares favorably to what I can get for that price in Cabernet in most of the world. At $40 it's a pass.

Well, it's cheaper than most 1996 Bordeaux because rep is so-so. But even on low end, I think I'd as soon have say the 1996 Cantemerle as the Meyney. But agree the under-$30 decent mature cab market is small.

Thanks for the note, Matt. I think I have some of this (I'm going to get on CellarTracker right after this and find out) and if so, I think I'll start drinking up.

You've got some time before it starts going downhill.
