WTN: Two White Burgundies

2000 Jean-Philippe Fichet Meursault Meix Sous la Château - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault (8/30/2007)
Tasted over two days, this is a pleasing and easy to drink White Burgundy. The oak is slowly integrating, and there's plenty of pear and quince flavor to carry the wine. Acid balance is good, and the finish is medium long and slightly spicy. Very nice, especially considering the close out price of $15/bottle.

2001 Louis Jadot Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru (8/30/2007)
Sometimes the aromas of the wine are enough. This was such a case. The scent of this wine was the essence of fall. Both Laura and I found myriad apple, pear, spice, pumpkin, dry leaves/forest, clove and other fall harvest scents. There's no way for the flavors to live up to the nose, but they are still very good, with more ofcus on the fruit and spices. Fine balance. Delicious wine.

Great price on the Fichet, usually solid producer I understand (I've only had a couple).

Not had the Meursault Genevieres, but Jadot's Puligny Folatieres was great in '01. I think Jadot's whites provide solid value, and often excitement.

My wife is making craband shrimp ravioli this weekend. My thoughts immediately turn to a white burgundy. The problem is to find a good one at a reasonable price requires a trek from my suburban outpost into DC or up to Baltimore. Still, both of these wines sound like a good match for the dish.

Dale,

I have bought a few bottlings from Fichet over the years & they are quite solid. He has mostly village land, but the wines are regularly high quality. I think he now has some 1er cru land, but I'm also sure there's a price premium.

James,

Sounds like a good match for White Burg, but also for dry Riesling, so perhaps you can find one of those closer to home.

It was truly bittersweet. I lost my favorite wine shop to the closeout (literally closing) sale. I drink the Mersault (and a closeout case of 2001 Jadot Gevrey Chambertin Estournelles St. Jacques) to ease the pain.

I thought of a dry riesling too. Of course I'm a sucker for dry rieslings so I think just about anything matches with it, even raw onions!
