WTN: Anders in Helsinki: Burgundy, Madiran, Ankara, Rheingau

by Saina » Mon Sep 17, 2007 6:05 pm

Since Anders was in town, I invited him and a good friend of mine, Samu, over for dinner:

I made a pot of a suspicious looking but palatable Boeuf Bourguignon:

  • 2004 Mongeard-Mugneret Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Narbantons - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru (9/17/2007)
A light colour. The nose is full of Pinosity, red toned fruit, sweet yet savoury. The palate is delightfully acidic, nervous and I don't find any of the greenness that many find in '04s. Attractive.
  • 1990 Domaine de Bories Madiran Vieilles Vignes - France, Southwest France, Madiran (9/17/2007)
13,8% abv. Very deep, almost black colour. The nose is savoury, herbal, as Madiran as Madiran can be in its meaty, dark toned and plummy fruit. The palate is still very tannic, but they are so ripe and mouthwatering that I don't mind them one bit. Though it isn't highly acidic, it is a very refreshing wine with a long aftertaste. It is a rather wild and animal wine and I love it!
  • 2002 Kavaklidere Kalecik Karası Ankara - Turkey, Ankara, Akyurt (9/17/2007)
A rather pale red. The nose is very sweet yet with some floral and citrussy notes to bring savouryness - the nose is very interesting, sort of like Musar without the funk! The palate is sweet but rather light bodied, pleasant enough, but lacking in both acidity and tannins so the aftertaste falls short. A very interesting wine and pleasant - certainly more than just a curiosity.
  • 2004 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Rheingau (9/17/2007)
A disappointment to my earlier tastes: pure Riesling aromatics, but somewhat acid deficient compared to my previous bottles which made it seem rather sweet. Still a pleasant wine, despite my disappointment.

Both the Burgundy and the Turkish wine were nice. The Madiran was my favourite wine yesterday, but it was so tannic I would have wanted rare meat with it.

Otto,

They look like a couple of happy bon vivants to me. After all the talk in chat, nice to see you and Anders finally met up. Was there a cup of tea served as well?

Thanks for the post!

Yes, it's really nice he had time to meet up despite the congress going on. There was not a cup of tea served but 5 cups. :)

Bob, the messy looking bookshelf is the one on the opposite end of the room.

Otto, thanks for a great evening! Very nice to meet you IRL, as well as Samu. I assure you that the Boeuf Bourgignonne was not only palatable but very good.

I was back at the hotel a little after 1 am, so I had some problem staying awake during a long day of lectures today, but it was worth it.

Regarding the wines, I agree on the Bourgogne lacking the greenness I often have had problems with in the 2004 vintage, in this wine it was more spicy instead. Maybe there's hope for the 2004 Burgundies after all.
I was impressed how you immediately spotted my wine as a Madiran. I certainly was wild and animaly and very exciting.

Finally, it was nice to taste some teas from your impressive collection.

I had a great evening!

So did I Otto! thanks again. Maybe we can meet in Stockholm next time.
Cheers, Anders

PS. Cynthia, too bad the storms stopped you from showing up! Maybe next time in Stockholm?

I guess the whole evening would have been a bit wild and animaly had you been there too! ;-)
