I met JC last night in Sonoma, and we opened the 2004 E/S (Elizabeth Spencer's "Reserve" Label) Pinot Noir from just west of the Carneros (Napa County) Line.
Much bigger and riper and more fruit forward than the previous bottle from them. Not necessarily my style of Pinot. But you know what? This winemaker still gets it right even if you are not 100% enamored with his stylistic choice.
Almost black in the glass. Tons of ripe black cherry fruit (2004 heat!). Woul some say this is a Syrah-style Pinot? I wouldn't go that far. Still decent acidity, though. As the wine opened up, other notes of earth and mushroom began appearing. It went very well with my Salmon "Nicoise" (I don't know how to type the diacritical marks
) Soild 3* for a fruit driven California "monster Pinot"
JC also oredered a Rosenblum Marsanne blend off the wine list. Lots of fruit here, too. A touch of RS? Peaches and citrus on the palate. Very enjoyable.!
