Wine shops in VA?

by Doug Surplus » Wed Oct 17, 2007 10:40 pm

I need the names of some good wine shops near Fredericksburg and/or Manassas for my bother (lives in Fredericksburg, works in Manassas).

He wanted to get some wine from a winery here in AZ, but apparently VA is not wine shipping friendly.

For the most part, you are better offging into DC for wine shopping. Threr have been prior posts on the usual suspects. Schneider's, Calvert Woodley and MacArthur's. Some of the Costco's in VA have a good selection and good pricing.

Doug, I've never shopped there, but Kybecca has two locations in Fredericksburg. I think there's also a Total wine down there.

In the D.C. suburbs, there are at least two very good shops, Arrowine, in Arlington, and The Vineyard, in McLean. Manassas has a Total Wine, and a shop downtown called Opera House Gourmet, which features Virginia wines. I haven't been in either in quite a while, and wouldn't call either a destination for fine wine, but if it's got to be in Manassas....

Virginia has never made a big deal about wines being shipped in (unlike neighboring Maryland); these days many wineries, and most retailers, do ship here.

When I was in Fredericksburg last May I found two really good winestores. I wish I could remember their names. They were both downtown though. There are Total Wine outlets all over N. Virginia. They always have a great selection of all the usual suspects. They also will carry some stuff no one else gets. Arrowine has an excellent rep. D.C. is wine Nirvana to me. The stores mentioned above are just the tip of the iceberg. I will say that Calvert-Woodley is having their annual Fall Sale. I would also say that Virginia has always been pretty friendly towards wine shipping. It should be no problem to get wines from Arizona into Virginia. Maryland is a b####!

Out to the west, Charles Smith keeps some interesting labels, at Washington Street Purveyors, aka "Gopher Wine":

He's got everything from Mollydooker to Louis/Dressner.

It's a little bit of a drive from Fredericksburg:

But I'm sure that UPS shipping would be a 1-Day zone.

Of course, Carolina Wine, down in Raleigh, NC, might be UPS 1-Day, as well:

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I'll pass the names to my brother. I'll also ask the winery here why they don't ship to VA (Neither does K&L Wine Merchants which is why I thought VA wasn't so open).

Tim, there's a Trader Joe's in McLean, in the Washington suburbs. They have an assortment of wine but it's value-oriented and not a very interesting selection for someone really into wine. They sell boatloads of Charles Shaw, and I mean boatloads.
