WTN: 2003 Rose Garden Vineyards Pinotage

by Paul B. » Mon Nov 12, 2007 1:05 pm

13.5% alc/vol; fruit sourced from bush vines. Dark, clear ruby-garnet with the mulberry hue that's typical of many Pinotages. Reticent albeit correct varietal nose comprising leather, elderberries (and maybe some elderflower notes) and smoky/savoury sun-dried tomatoes. Properly consistent on the mid-palate with a balanced, medium-bodied structure. Not as tough and brutish in structure or on the finish as I'd like, but a very serviceable Pinotage nevertheless. $14.95 at Vintages on recent release.

An aside: I really miss the fabulous Libertas Pinotage that used to sell as a regular-listing item at the LCBO some 8 years ago. It only cost $7.95 and, although lighter-bodied than many an estate version featured at Vintages, it nevertheless packed a fantastic amount of leather and bitter grapeskin tannins - an acquired taste to be sure, but one that I acquired very early.

Hi Paul,
You don't mention where this wine is from. I'm assuming, without googling, that it's from Sth Africa, but Pinotage is grown in many diverse locations now.
Do you think the 'mulberry' colour is something that has come with age.
I've tasted young Pinotage than has had a luminescent red-blue to the colour. Very attractive.
Cheers
Sue

Hi Sue,

Yes - it's South African. I didn't get a geographic descriptor on the label (e.g. Stellenbosch, Paarl, etc.) though maybe I just didn't look closely.

Typically I find the mulberry colour to be there even during youth.

Oh well, maybe I don't really know what 'mulberry' colour is.
Cheers,
Sue
